Georgian College is shutting down its campuses in Muskoka and Orillia.
In a news release late Friday morning, the school says it will consolidate those campuses into the Barrie campus by fall 2026.
The Orillia campus will close in summer 2026, with programs transitioning to Barrie starting in May. The Muskoka campus, located in Bracebridge, will close in August 2026.
"The decision comes after a comprehensive review of efficiencies, enrolment, labour-market trends, community impact and the college's financial realities," according to a statement from the college. "There is no impact on students' graduation timelines or their ability to progress and complete their programs on time.
Angela Foster, president of the local OPSEU (Ontario Public Service Employees Union)branch representing workers in Orillia, says today's announcement came out of nowhere.
"Typically, as president of the support staff union, I would get a heads-up from our leaders so that I can ensure that our folks are told in a very respectful and thoughtful way. This morning, that did not happen."
"It's heartbreak," said Foster, when asked about the mood among the staff. "There are so many tears. This is a very close family at Georgian. We care deeply about each other."
Georgian says the decision to shut down the Orillia and Muskoka campuses impacts about 1,340 students.
As for the workers in Orillia and Muskoka, Georgian says it will support all employees through the transition and communicate directly with those affected about how the consolidation will impact them.
Kevin Weaver, president and CEO of Georgian College, says this was a difficult decision that will be felt deeply by students, employees and communities.
"Recognizing these are challenging times and the sector is experiencing a labour disruption, I still felt it was important to advise our community of the decision. It's the right decision for the long-term sustainability of the college and the success of our students."
Support staff at Ontario colleges have been on strike for two weeks.

The consolidation is expected to save the college approximately $23.5 million over the next five years.
"Additionally, the planned sale of the Orillia campus and residence, as well as the Muskoka campus, will place the college on a stronger path toward financial sustainability," according to the statement from the school.
Georgian says it continues to evaluate its campus network, including potential opportunities for the John Di Poce South Georgian Bay campus in Collingwood, and building on the strengths of the Midland, Orangeville and Owen Sound campuses.
In May, Georgian announced it would pause operations indefinitely at its Collingwood campus, citing the provincial funding model and declining enrolment.
"The Orillia and Muskoka campuses have played an integral role in Georgian's story," said Weaver. "While our physical footprint will be smaller, our commitment to these regions remains strong through partnerships, community initiatives and ongoing support for students. This decision helps Georgian continue delivering high-quality programs and impact outcomes for students and communities."
Georgian's roots in Orillia began in 1969 with a temporary campus downtown.
The current property on Memorial Avenue opened in 1980, and is home to programs in veterinary studies, community safety, and human services.
Georgian College established its Muskoka Campus (in Bracebridge) in 1977 to meet local demand for training in healthcare, skilled trades, business, and the service sector.
