The South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) has officially launched Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), a major upgrade to the region’s emergency communications system aimed at improving public safety and response times.

What Is NG9-1-1?

NG9-1-1 is a multi-stage initiative that modernizes the traditional 9-1-1 network by integrating advanced digital technology. While residents will continue to dial 9-1-1 the same way, the new system provides dispatchers with faster and more accurate caller location and phone number information, enhanced cybersecurity, and expanded backup capabilities in case of system failure.

Future-Ready Emergency Services

One of the most exciting features of NG9-1-1 is its ability to support real-time text messaging and other digital technologies in the future—making emergency services more accessible and responsive than ever before.

In 2024 alone, SSPS responded to 28,534 calls for service, and officials expect NG9-1-1 to significantly improve how quickly and effectively those calls are handled.

Government Support and Funding

The Ontario government has invested over $650,000 to support South Simcoe’s transition to NG9-1-1. Solicitor General Michael Kerzner praised the initiative, calling it a “game changer” for public safety communications.

“Next Generation 9-1-1 gives first responders real-time, life-saving information, which means a faster, more effective emergency response,” said Kerzner. “More calls will be answered, more lives will be saved.”

Powered by Collaboration

The NG9-1-1 system was made possible through a partnership with Solacom, the system supplier, and Bell, the official network provider, who provided technical integration support.
