The U11 BB Charon Clute Insurance Barrie Jr. Colts defeated the Markham Waxers 4-1 in the York Simcoe Championship game on Sunday afternoon and were crowned league champions. The win secured their trip to the Ontario Minor Hockey Championships.
Barrie finished the regular season 21-1-2, with their only loss of the campaign coming at the hands of the Waxers.
Ethan Elder opened the scoring for Barrie in the first period. He found the back of the net again early in the second. The Colts’ captain flew down the wing, cut to the net and popped a backhand past the Markham goaltender for 2-0 lead. Easton Mitsku added breathing room late in the frame, banging in a loose puck to make it 3-0.
Markham would not give up without a fight, finally getting on the scoresheet early in the 3rd, but Jackson Cadieux put the game away when he potted an insurance marker late in the third.
Barrie lost just one game during the regular season.
The Jr. Colts will play in the OMHA Championships in Windsor at the end of the month.
The Under 13 BB team will join them at the championships after beating their Markham Waxers counterparts 9-2 to cap off an undefeated season.
