Two pet dogs die in Essa house fire

Cause of the fire is under investigation

Extensive damage to a home following a fire in Essa Township.

According to a social media post by the OPP, two family dogs died as a result of the blaze, which happened early Monday morning at a residence on Side Road 30.

In an email to Barrie 360, Essa Fire Chief Doug Burgin said the residence was set up as two apartments.

"Two occupants in basement apartment alerted by smoke alarms and got out without injury," Burgin said.

He added that damage is pegged at $600,000.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it is not believed to be suspicious.

Due to the blaze, Side Road 30 between the 9th and 8th Line was closed but has since reopened.
