York Regional Police have arrested and charged three men in connection with a shooting earlier this year that left an innocent man critically injured as he walked his dog on a street in Schomberg.
Investigators allege the suspects, believed to be members of the MS-13 gang, were hired by an organized crime group to kill a man.
"The suspects targeted the wrong person and shot the victim instead," police said in a news release on Friday.
On February 12, 2023, police say the 65-year-old victim had been walking his dog on Centre Street when a car passed him at a high rate of speed and multiple gunshots were fired from the vehicle and the man was struck several times. The victim is going through a lengthy recovery process, according to police, but will survive.
In the last couple of weeks, search warrants were executed at various locations in Toronto.
The suspects have been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
During the investigation, police say they seized a handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle with ammunition and a drum magazine. Quantities of cocaine and fentanyl were also seized.
