Arson and other charges against an Orillia man following Saturday crime spree

Suspect is accused of starting a fire at a townhouse

A wild Saturday morning in Orillia as provincial police were contacted in the wee hours about a man on a motorcycle who had smashed an apartment window and a truck window on Nottawasaga Street before fleeing.

A short while later, police received a report of a man on a motorcycle who was refusing to leave a Mississauga Street address. Police arrested the man and launched an impaired driving investigation. Officers allege they seized a large knife and discovered the motorcycle had been reported stolen.

The man is also alleged to have started a fire at a townhouse on Regent Street that morning which was being investigated by the Ontario Fire Marshal. Damage to the residence was pegged at $150,000.

A 50-year-old Orillia man faces numerous charges including arson, several weapons and assault-related offences, obstruct and resist arrest, theft, impaired driving, mischief, and unlawfully being in a house.
