Donnie MacIntosh isn’t looking to pick a fight.
In fact, the Barrie mechanic says he wants to go to Ukraine to assist where he can, in particular, use his skills as a mechanic and in IT.
“God forbid, if I have to pick up a weapon and guard a town, then I am willing to do both,” he added.
The 52-year-old has a gun licence but no military training.
In fact, MacIntosh doesn’t want anyone to think he is heading to Ukraine to play Rambo.
“I am a mechanic and own my own business, and I went to school for it,” he explained. “I want to go over to help the Ukrainian people and the military, maybe fix military vehicles.”
MacIntosh has registered with the Ukrainian embassy in Ottawa, though he is not sure if he will hear back. MacIntosh said Ukraine is eliminating visa requirements to go over there.
His wife, Karen, told Barrie 360 that her husband has connected with several other guys from Canada and the U.S., and the plan is to raise funds and take a private charter to Poland and from there head to Ukraine.
MacIntosh admits his wife has tried to talk him out of this trip, which he hopes to take in the next week or two. He also is a father of two children, a stepdad to three adult kids, and he has six grandchildren.
He is raising money to help pay for the trip and is accepting donations at the couple’s south end business at 149 Welham Road, Unit 23.
MacIntosh says this war is horrible for everyone.
“There are people getting killed on both sides, Ukrainian and Russian,” he told Barrie 360. “It’s quite a travesty going on. The Russian people didn’t ask for this war, and in their own country there are protests and people are being jailed. I feel sorry for them as much as I feel sorry for the Ukrainian people.”
