The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sounding the alarm on off-road vehicle safety nearly half of all ATV-related deaths in 2024 were linked to riders not wearing helmets or operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Of the 34 people who died in OPP-investigated off-road vehicle incidents last year, 18 were not wearing a helmet—equipment police say could have offered life-saving protection. Another 15 fatalities were tied to impaired driving.
A Partnership to Promote Safer Trails
To tackle these trends, the OPP is teaming up with the Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs during ATV Safety Awareness Week (May 30 to June 8, 2025). Together, they’re promoting safe riding habits in off-road communities across the province.
“Make every ride a Smart Ride, Safe Ride,” the OPP urges, reminding riders to always wear an approved helmet, drive sober, and ride within their skill level—especially on unfamiliar or uneven terrain.

The OPP is also warning riders about two of the most common—and preventable—causes of deadly crashes: speeding and loss of control. Regular vehicle maintenance and responsible riding are key to making it home safely after every trip.
“With the right preparation and decisions, these incidents are largely avoidable,” police said.
Youth Safety a Priority
The OPP is encouraging parents and guardians to lead by example and enroll young riders in Ontario’s online ATV Training Course for Youth, helping the next generation of riders build strong safety habits from the start.
