The iconic Australian yeast concoction "Vegemite" turns 100 years old.

Millions of Australians start the day with this spread on toast with butter.

The salty, yeasty spread is a staple in the country, used in professional kitchens, baked goods, soups and much more.

Vegemite first rolled off the assembly line on October 25, 1923, when the Fred Walker Company hired chemist Dr Cyril P. Callister to create a spread from brewer's yeast.

Aussies didn't take to it initially, but people needed a nutritious condiment by World War II.

Vegemite's formula became one of the world's richest known sources of natural vitamin B.

Soon, people couldn't get enough; now, over a century of Aussies have grown up on the stuff.
