Avatar: The Way of Water cost so much money to make, it'll have to make billions to generate a profit.

In an interview with GQ, famed director James Cameron said the sequel to the 2009 film “was very f***ing” expensive to make and added “was the worst business case in movie history.”

He went on to say it has to make movie history to be successful to make a profit.
“You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

The first Avatar, released in 2009, is the highest grossing movie of all time, bringing in $2.9 billion, while it cost $237 million to make.

He admits that the movie industry is a different beast than it was when he wrote the sequel, with streaming potentially taking a piece of the hard-earned pie.

In a separate interview with Total Film, he said “maybe we’ll remind people what going to the theatre is all about. This film definitely does that. The question is: how many people give a s&!t now?”

Avatar: The Way of Water has a runtime of 3hrs and 10 minutes.
It hits theatres on December 16.
