The City of Barrie’s 2023 Heritage Awards were presented at last evening’s City Council Meeting. These awards are presented annually by the City’s Heritage Committee to buildings, individuals, and groups who have contributed to preserving Barrie’s community heritage and who share awareness of historical conservation.
The 2023 Heritage Barrie award winners are:
Commercial Award: 30 Mary Street
The home at 30 Mary Street is referred to as Dutton House and has been extensively restored. It is now home to Renegade Digital Media Inc.
Residential Award: 123 Toronto Street
The home at 123 Toronto Street is unique in Barrie, as it reflects a transition away from traditional architectural styles at the turn of the 20th century.
Residential Award: 96 Sunnidale Road
The home at 96 Sunnidale Road is referred to as Woodlawn, and its owner has restored and refurbished this grand estate to make it look as it did 145 years ago.
Individual Award: Trudee Romanek
Trudee Romanek’s play, Bobbie, brought Barrie sports icon Bobbie Rosenfeld to life, celebrating the female athlete’s incredible accomplishments. With the popularity of the play, Trudee rekindled interest in Bobbie’s role in Barrie’s cultural heritage.
Individual Award: Steve Glover
Steve Glover is the Barrie Legion Branch’s Historian and Public Relations Officer. He is a strong advocate for promoting the remembrance of local veterans, Legions, and Canadian military history.
Group Award: Barrie Legion 147 Members
The Barrie Legion 147 strives to conserve and preserve local and regional military history. With public support through the Catch the Ace lottery, the Legion added several display cases to house uniforms, photos, medals, and other items of those who served.
If Barrie residents are interested in having their heritage property formally recognized, they can visit the City’s Heritage Register webpage at barrie.ca/heritage for information on how to apply. The Municipal Heritage Register is a list of properties that includes Designated Buildings and Buildings of Heritage Interest. It recognizes properties of cultural heritage value, fosters civic identify and pride, promotes education of a community’s cultural heritage, and provides information about cultural heritage.
