The Barrie Baycats 18U Rep baseball team will be swinging for the fences with a special community game to help fight hunger in the city.
The club will play the Baycats 17U Rep team before many of the players head off for their post-secondary education.
"These rep-level athletes are utilizing this regular season game to take on something bigger - food insecurity," the team said in a media release.
The players will collect sealed non-perishable food donations for the Barrie Food Bank at the field before the game. Priority items include diapers, canned goods, peanut butter, children's lunch snacks, breakfast cereals, high-protein drinks, pasta sauces, and other non-perishables.
"These rep-level athletes, aged 17-18, have spent 11 months honing their skills as part of the Barrie Minor Baseball Association. Now they’re channeling that competitive spirit into tackling food insecurity – proving that winning looks different when the whole community benefits," the news release stated.
The game will take place on Wednesday, July 16, at Lennox Park "B" field, located at 319 Big Bay Point Road. Fan arrivals can begin at 6 p.m., and the game will start at 7:15 p.m.
