Barrie police arrest suspects in catalytic converter thefts

The thefts occurred between September 2021 and January of this year

Two Barrie residents face charges in connection with the theft of dozens of catalytic converters within the city.

Police say 43 of them were swiped between Sept. 28, 2021 and Jan. 28 of this year.

The investigation was conducted by members of the Barrie Police Street Crime Unit and when necessary, they were assisted by the service’s Human Trafficking Unit.

Police say investigators determined the thefts were mostly taking place during the overnight hours and were consistent with other jurisdictions in Ontario that were experiencing similar occurrences.

Surveillance video from one of the thefts captured an image of a vehicle that was believed to be involved.

On Thursday, Feb. 10, a 47-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were arrested and charged with 51 criminal offences.

Both were held in custody and appeared the following day for a bail hearing.
