In a display of community spirit, Barrie Colts' Kashawn Aitcheson is leading a March break blood drive event that hopes to raise awareness and encourage more people to donate.

The initiative, coordinated by Hockey Gives Blood and Canadian Blood Services, goes till Saturday, March 15th.

The 18-year-old defenceman highlighted the importance of being actively involved in the community.

“It means a lot to me, just obviously being able to help out and give back to a community that gives us so much,” he shared in an interview with Barrie 360.

Having donated blood five to six times in the past, Aitcheson said it's rewarding knowing the donation goes to someone in need.

"It's a great feeling," said Aitcheson. "Knowing that you can save a young kid or adult's life."

Aitcheson will be at Barrie's Canadian Blood Services location (231 Bayview Drive) on Thursday, March 13, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. chatting and connecting with donors and hockey fans.

Participants will not only have the chance to donate, but can also be entered into a draw to win a hockey stick signed by Aitcheson.

Season so far and playoffs ahead

Transitioning to the ice, Aitcheson discussed the Barrie Colts' season and his individual growth, as he is projected to be selected in the first round of the 2025 NHL draft.

He feels he has made significant strides, especially on the offensive side - recently tying the franchise record for goals by a defenceman. While as a team, the Colts captured the Central Division title Tuesday with a win over the Niagara IceDogs.

The season has also been marked by the integration of new teammates, including former North Bay Battalion trio Dalyn Wakely, Owen Van Steensel, and Anthony Romani.

Even though the second half of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season has seen the Colts go on win streaks and losing skids, Aitcheson says they have the pieces to make a run in the upcoming playoffs.

"Our team has so many players that are heart and soul [guys] that will put their body on the line and I think we're a team that will thrive in the playoffs especially with so many guys having experience," he said.

“All my focus is towards the team right now and just trying to go as deep as we can.”
