The Barrie Colts’ Head Coach is undergoing treatment for stomach cancer.
TSN reports that coach Dale Hawerchuk is undergoing chemotherapy following diagnosis in August. The Hockey Hall of Famer stepped away from his coaching duties with the Colts in early September. A release from the team said it was to deal with a health issue.
Hawerchuk played in the NHL for 16 years, having been scooped up by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He retired in 1997. The 56-year-old was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001, and was named Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Barrie Colts in June of 2010.
