The City of Barrie has the lowest Crime Severity Index (CSI) in Canada, according to Statistics Canada. This is an improvement from 2022 when Barrie was the second lowest on the index.
In 2023, Barrie's CSI was 48.1, significantly lower than the national average of 80.5. The CSI measures both the number and relative severity of crimes.
Mayor Alex Nuttall expressed pride in this achievement, attributing it to the combined efforts of the police service, council, and the entire community. He emphasized this improvement from the second lowest to the top spot demonstrates the positive outcomes of collective effort.
"It’s clear that when we work together, great things happen," he said.

Additionally, Barrie's violent Crime Severity Index decreased by nearly 4% from 61.6 in 2022 to 57.9 in 2023.

It noted that the volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada increased by 2% in 2023, marking the third consecutive year of rising crime rates since 2015.
