Barrie food charity raising funds to deliver meal boxes to those in need at Christmas

Meal boxes are delivered monthly

Launched in June 2022 by Leah Dyck, Fresh Food Weekly delivers meal boxes to the doorsteps of low-income families in Barrie, and now planning is underway for the holidays.

Dyck says she needs to raise $5,000 to make 100 meal boxes for Christmas.

A number of local growers and businesses have stepped up to assist with food.

"Everybody has the choice of getting a turkey, and the size of the turkey will depend on the number of people in the family," says Dyck. "They will also get their choice of eggnog, milk, a choice of eight different types of loaves of bread, as well as dinner rolls."

The meal will also include an assortment of vegetables.

Each month, the organization puts together 65 meal boxes, though numbers vary, and 81 meal boxes were prepared in November, and 150 during October because of Thanksgiving.

Deliveries of the Christmas meal boxes will begin on Dec. 19. Dyck believes she has enough drivers to make those deliveries.

Information about the organization is at freshfoodweekly.com
