A routine patrol turned into a dramatic arrest early Sunday morning when a Barrie Police officer spotted a 26-year-old man wanted on multiple warrants for Theft Under $5000.
The incident unfolded at 6:09 a.m. near Anne Street South and Dunlop Street, where the officer observed the suspect and attempted to make an arrest. The man resisted and fled across the street, where a motorist had just pulled into a gas station on the northeast corner.
Suspect Tries to Hijack Vehicle, Fails to Escape
In an attempt to evade police, the suspect jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Fortunately, he was unable to start the car before the officer caught up and took him into custody after a brief struggle. The vehicle’s owner was unharmed.
Additional Charges Filed, Bail Hearing Scheduled
The accused has been remanded in custody and faces several new charges, including:
- Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
- Failure to Comply with Probation (2 counts)

An early morning incident believed to be an attempted carjacking at a gas station in Barrie is under investigation by Barrie Police.
Just after 6 a.m., police were alerted to the incident at a gas station at the intersection of Anne Street and Dunlop Street.
A suspect was reportedly attempting to carjack a vehicle parked at the pumps before officers chased the suspect on foot and later apprehending them.
Paramedics eventually responded to the scene, and police confirmed one person was taken to hospital.
A perimeter under the station's canopy was taped off by officers and yellow cones were placed marking the scene. The white Volkswagen remains a focus, it appears.
Barrie Police confirmed there is an ongoing investigation and the incident is isolated.
