City of Barrie launches Art on Transit

News release - City of Barrie

The City of Barrie has installed five digital artworks created by local and Ontario-based visual artists on 10 high-profile bus shelters in all wards of the city. The artworks were inspired by an original poem entitled, unexpected destinations, written by Barrie’s Poet Laureate, Tyneisha Thomas.

Art on Transit is a new public art initiative facilitated by the Barrie Public Art Committee in partnership with Barrie Transit. The artworks on display will be in place for approximately five years and are intended to contribute to civic pride, bring vibrancy to the city and highlight artistic collaboration.

The selected artists and installation locations include:

  • Brad MacMillan – Ward 2, Stop 608, near Victoria Village and Ward 7, Stop 488, near Peggy Hill Team Community Centre.
  • Laura Keeling – Ward 4, Stop 202, 49 Coulter Street and Ward 8, Stop 719, near Barrington Retirement Residence.
  • Marne Grahlman – Ward 1, Stop 332, Gallie Court at Quarry Ridge and Ward 10, Stop 728, near Tollendale Village.
  • Petra Victoria – Ward 3, Stop 447, near East Bayfield Community Centre and Ward 6, Stop 307, on Loggers Run.
  • Reesha Morar – Ward 9, Stop 704, Yonge Street at Big Bay Point Road and Ward 5, Stop 899, Leacock Drive at Frost Trail.

Citizens are encouraged to ride Barrie Transit to view the entire series of images and show their civic pride by taking a selfie with the installations and tagging @CreativeBarrie on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook.

View the Art on Transit Map and learn more about the installations at barrie.ca/PublicArt  or check out the News tab on MyRideBarrie.ca.
