Officers with the Barrie Police Service responded to an incident yesterday afternoon involving a man, a spoon, and a bank machine.

Around 5:30 p.m., police attended to a bank at Minet’s Point Road and Yonge Street for a report of a man breaking into the drive-thru bank machine.

Police say once at the scene they had a man in custody.

"The responding officers closely examined the bank machine and could not see any visible damage," police said in a release on Wednesday.

"After further investigation and based upon information received from the male who was in custody, it was determined that he was using a spoon to pry open a small refuse slot in the bank machine."

According to officers, a 40-year-old of no fixed address was released "unconditionally from custody."

"When spoken to about why police responded, [he] quickly realized the optics of what he was doing and fully understood why his actions warranted a concerned citizen to notify police," officers continued.

"The Barrie Police Service wish to thank the citizen who called to advise of the suspicious activity they believed that they were witnessing. In situations like this, it is always best to notify police and allow them to investigate and fully determine what is happening. Under no circumstances should anyone ever approach an unknown person who they suspect is committing a criminal offence. A call to police is always appreciated, and by doing so, the safety of the caller will not be compromised."
