The American flag has been removed from city-owned facilities in response to the U.S. government's decision to impose tariffs on Canadian imports.

Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall told Barrie 360 he decided to remove the American flags. He said it was appropriate because of the economic attack on families and jobs.

"If there is American teams coming to play in our facilities, then we'll be respectful and put them up for those games," the mayor added.

" I don't think we should be flying the flag repeatedly at all times of the country where the president is threatening our sovereignty, our freedom to choose our own future and attacking the jobs that our people have."

Nuttall acknowledged that removing American flags from city-owned facilities is symbolic.

"We shouldn't be flying the flag of the country that's taking jobs away and that is threatening whether we can have a country at all."

The mayor added that American flags were in facilities such as arenas.
