Barrie to become home to professional soccer as Toronto FC II announces 2028 relocation

Barrie will become home to professional soccer for the first time after officials announced Tuesday that Toronto FC II will relocate to the city in 2028 and play in a new purpose-built downtown stadium.

The City of Barrie, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), MLS Next Pro and Barrie Stadium Group made the announcement during a public event at Meridian Place, where supporters and community members gathered alongside representatives from the organizations and all levels of government.

It's move is part of a landmark partnership that also includes plans for a new soccer-specific stadium in downtown Barrie.

The proposed 3,500-seat venue will become the future home of the club while also serving as a community facility capable of hosting concerts, festivals, amateur sports and other public events. Barrie Stadium Group will partner with the city to develop and operate the venue.

Organizers say the stadium is designed to become one of the most recognizable small soccer venues in North America and will serve as a year-round gathering place in the city's downtown.

Toronto FC II competes in MLS Next Pro, the professional development league operated by U.S.-based Major League Soccer. The team plays a role in developing young players for Toronto FC and the league. Currently, the club plays its home games at York Lions Stadium on the campus of York University.

When the club relocates to Barrie in 2028, it will continue competing in MLS Next Pro while expanding the professional soccer pathway for athletes throughout Simcoe County and Central Ontario.

The club was introduced Tuesday as Barrie MLS Next Pro, although officials said its permanent name, crest, colours, and branding will be revealed at a later date.

Officials say the investment is intended to strengthen youth sports opportunities while creating a destination for professional soccer, entertainment and community programming in Barrie's downtown.

Tuesday's announcement comes as soccer continues to grow in popularity across Canada following the country's role as a host of major international competitions and ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Additional details about the stadium project, founding memberships, season tickets, sponsorship opportunities and community partnerships are expected to be announced in the coming months.
