Find new treasures, get rid of unwanted items for free on New to Me Day

News release – City of Barrie

Plan to declutter your space with New to Me Day Saturday, June 11.

City of Barrie residents are invited to place unwanted items, labelled “free” at the curb for other residents and community members to browse and take for their own use, free of charge.

New to Me Day helps the City and its residents support a circular economy by keeping items in use longer and preventing their unnecessary end of life at the landfill.

This event, now back after two years of the pandemic, gives residents the opportunity to organize, clean up and find a new home for unwanted items, while also picking up something they may want or need. Here’s how it works:

  1. Do some spring cleaning and gather up items around your home that are no longer used, but that other people might like to have (toys, books, furniture, sporting goods, small appliances, tools, art, etc.) On the morning of June 11, put your items at the curb.
  2. Add the New to Me Day poster to show that your items are free to take and/or share your items on the City’s Facebook event page starting June 10.
  3. Look for free treasures, curbside, around your neighbourhood.

You can also share the items you have available—post on the City’s Facebook event page to show others what you’re offering. If you find something great, share your haul on social media using #NewToMe!

New to Me runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on June 11. Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9 p.m. that day as there will be no special municipal collection. If residents need to get rid of items, they can visit barrie.ca/AlternativeOptions or barrie.ca/landfill for more information on how to properly do so.
