A "machete-wielding" man was arrested by Barrie police following a weapons call in the downtown area, officers say.

Police responded to Collier Street, just west of Berczy Street, around 2:20 p.m. on Saturday.

"Responding officers took a 30-year-old male from Barrie into custody after he had been restrained by a family he had just accosted," police said in a media release.

"It was at this time police learned that the male had aggressively approached them as they walked eastbound on Collier Street, began to yell at them, and then pulled out a large machete which he swung violently, striking one of the family members."

He was held in custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing today.
