Barrie Police says it will continue to have a significant presence in the area of Bayview Drive and Little Avenue Friday and Saturday while the investigation into the death of a 10-year-old old child on New Year's Eve continues.

Officers went to a residence at a townhouse complex on Bayview Drive around 3 p.m. on Wednesday in response to a well-being check. In the unit, officers located a 10-year-old child who was dead.

The child's 47-year-old mother, was also found inside the residence and was taken to a local hospital, where she remains.

Police say there is no threat to public safety.

Among the units remaining on-scene are the Barrie Police Major Crime Unit, which has taken over the criminal investigation, along with the Forensic Identification Unit.

"Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits," Barrie Police concluded in a news release.
