A man faces multiple charges after Barrie police initially arrested him for public intoxication and say he later spat on and struck an officer.
The ordeal happened on Monday just after 7:00 p.m. when officers responded to a downtown Dunlop Street East establishment after a man entered the business and asked that they call the police.
"The male had indicated that it was an emergency but would not elaborate as to what the emergency was," officers stated in a release.
"Once police arrived, they met a very intoxicated male who was very unsteady on his feet and was talking in a nonsensical manner. He was arrested under the Liquor Licence Act for Being Intoxicated in a Public Place."
The 49-year-old of no fixed address was taken to police headquarters where officers say "matters became compounded."
"As the male was being booked in, he spat at one of the arresting officers and struck him on his face and vest," police added.
He was further charged with assault and failing to comply with a probation order.
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing today.
