On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, an officer from the Barrie Police Service Traffic Unit was working in the Mapleview Drive East and Goodwin Drive area enforcing the speed limit due to multiple complaints from local residents of excessive speeds, loud vehicles and racing motor vehicles.
At 10:42 a.m., a westbound motor vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed and this was confirmed by an approved speed measuring device. The driver, a 36-year-old male from Toronto and was charged with Speeding – 95km/h in a 50km/h zone, Drive Motor Vehicle- Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed, Drive Motor Vehicle – Fail to Display Two Plates and Fail to Have Insurance Card.
In the early afternoon, at 1:42 p.m., the officer observed an eastbound motor vehicle that was travelling at 104km/h in a 50km/h zone. This driver, a 31-year-old male from Innisfil, was charged with speeding and Drive Motor Vehicle- Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed.
Just over an hour later, at 2:52 p.m., a 24-year-old male from Barrie was observed operating his motor vehicle eastbound on Mapleview Drive East at 99km/h in a 50km/h zone. He was charged with speeding and Drive Motor Vehicle- Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed.
Each of these drivers had their Ontario Drivers Licence suspended for a period of 30 days and their motor vehicles impounded for 14 days.
Traffic safety is a key priority that has been identified in the Barrie Police Service Strategic Plan and as a police service, we are working to reduce speed and hold those accountable who place other motorists at risk.
