A Barrie Police Service officer spotted a man "walking off the sidewalk and into the live lanes" of Bayfield Street early this morning.
Police stated in a release that the officer was on general patrol at the time, heading northbound on Bayfield near Highway 400.
"The officer, who was concerned for the safety and wellbeing of this 23-year-old man, stopped and very quickly recognized that the male was intoxicated," police said.
They say the man was taken into custody for being intoxicated in a public place.
"He was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters, where he was lodged until it was safe to release him," police continued.
"Although incidents such as this are rare, the proactive actions displayed by the involved officer are supported within this provincial legislation (LLCA) and exist where a person is not able to care for themselves or it is believed by police, that the safety of the person is at risk."
