Barrie police seize drugs, currency, prohibited weapon during traffic stop

Suspects attempted to flee on foot

A vehicle stopped by Barrie police for driving erratically on Hart Drive Monday evening resulted in the seizure of drugs, cash and a prohibited weapon.

Police say the vehicle pulled into a parking lot and the occupants attempted to flee on foot. The two men were ordered to stop, which they did, and they returned to their vehicle. Police began an investigation that netted marijuana and methamphetamine found in the car. A further search of the males turned up a large amount of Canadian currency and a prohibited weapon.

Police discovered the men had been staying in a nearby hotel. Their belongings that had been in the rented room were turned over to the police. The suspects were transported to police headquarters. While at headquarters, 10 large zip-lock bags that contained methamphetamine was found in the belongings that had been at the hotel.

In total, police seized 11.1 pounds or 4.586 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine.

The car driver, a 33-year-old Barrie man, and a 45-year-old man from Spanish, were charged with drug-related offences. The driver was also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.
