The Barrie Chamber of Commerce has jumped on the Ontario Big City Mayor's (OBCM) 'Solve The Crisis' initiative to address humanitarian in Barrie and across the province.

The Chamber is urging its members, and the community, to lobby the provincial government to take more decisive steps to ensure all residents of Ontario have access to safe housing, mental health support, and essential addiction services.

The crisis has visibly impacted downtown areas and public spaces in Barrie, placing a substantial burden on vulnerable community members despite ongoing government investments and initiatives. Recognizing the need for urgent, coordinated action, the Barrie Chamber of Commerce urges residents and businesses alike to engage with the campaign by visiting solvethecrisis.ca. Through this platform, community members can petition their Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to prioritize decisive steps towards resolving these critical issues.

Central to the campaign is the call for the Ontario government to establish a dedicated ministry equipped with the resources and authority necessary to address housing, mental health, and addiction needs. The proposed ministry would aim to enhance coordination and empower local communities with effective solutions, including establishment of 24/7 Community Hubs or Crisis Centres.

In addition to advocating for governmental action, the Barrie Chamber of Commerce supports the formation of a task force comprising stakeholders from municipalities, healthcare, first responders, community services, business, and tourism sectors. This collective approach is intended to develop a tailored 'Made in Ontario' Action Plan, addressing the unique challenges faced by communities across the province.

While progress has been made, the Chamber maintains much work remains. It has committed to working collaboratively with OBCM, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, and other partners to drive meaningful change to alleviate the current crisis, and pave the way for long-term improvements in the community.

The Barrie Chamber of Commerce encourages all stakeholders to join forces in this initiative, emphasizing that the time for action is now. Through concerted efforts, the Chamber believes Barrie and Ontario can achieve a safer, healthier environment for all residents.
