Barrie Ward Three Seat Officially Declared Vacant Following Federal Vote

How To Fill It? That Comes Next

City Hall has officially declared Doug Shipley’s council seat vacant, kicking off the process to see it filled once again.

At Monday night’s meeting of council, officials voted to have the seat declared vacant, the first step in the process; The Municipal Act of 2001 requires this step now that Shipley has provided notice to City Hall that he won’t be coming back. His letter of resignation was filed the day after Shipley was voted in as MP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro Medonte.

While there was no decision made at Monday’s meeting on how to fill the vacancy, city staff are expected to provide a report to council outlining the different options available, in a report expected November 18th, with final approval on the 25th.. The most likely being a by-election, as City Council has three years left to its term.
