The City of Barrie reminds residents that waterfront hangtag parking passes for Barrie residents expired on December 31, 2023. Residents must replace their physical hangtag pass with a digital waterfront parking permit.
This digital permit provides Barrie residents with the continued flexibility to park for free at designated waterfront locations, eliminating the need for a physical hangtag. There is no cost for residents to use the HotSpot app or website to get their digital permit, and no payment information is required.
For neighbouring municipalities (including Oro-Medonte, Essa, Innisfil or Springwater) and non-neighbouring municipalities, the cost of the permit is based on residence.
“As the weather gets warmer, we remind residents to make the switch to the HotSpot app for their digital permit if they haven’t already, to avoid getting ticketed,” said Brent Forsyth, Director of Transit and Parking Strategy. “The benefits of the digital waterfront parking permit extend beyond just convenience, with no limit to the number of permits someone can register for if they have multiple vehicles registered to a Barrie address.”

Residents can apply directly through the HotSpot app. You do not need to create an account for this service, however once the waterfront parking permit application is submitted via the app or website, residents will receive an approval/rejection notice within 3 to 5 days. An approved permit is required prior to parking at the waterfront.
If you don’t have a phone or mobile device, or if you prefer to apply in person, bring the required documentation (vehicle ownership document and proof of address) to one of the below locations. City staff will validate and set you up in HotSpot and you can receive an immediate approval/rejection notice on-the-spot.
- Service Barrie at City Hall, 70 Collier Street
- Peggy Hill Team Community Centre, 171 Mapleton Avenue
- East Bayfield Community Centre, 80 Livingstone Street East
- Allandale Recreation Centre, 190 Bayview Drive
- Parkview Centre, 189 Blake Street
All digital permits issued in 2022, 2023 or 2024 will expire on December 31, 2024.
Residents are reminded that while a digital permit grants free parking access to specific waterfront areas, parking without a permit in these lots incurs a fee of $10 per hour, with a daily maximum of $50 in waterfront parking areas, which is enforced 24/7/365.
