Assault with a weapon charge among others for youth after confrontation with driver

Barrie Police

A 14-year-old is facing charges including assault with a weapon after police say a confrontation occurred with a driver on Sunday.

Barrie police say the interaction happened around 6:45 p.m.

"A motorist was at the intersection of Little Avenue and Yonge Street with the right of way, when a group of four youths walked in front of his car forcing him to stop in order to avoid a collision," officers wrote in a news release on Monday.

"The motorist called out to the youthful pedestrians to make them aware of their ill-advised actions when one of the male’s turned and began walking towards the car."

Police say the driver exited his car as the youth pulled an object from his pocket and held it in a "threatening manner."

"The driver believed that he was going to be attacked and began to move away from the youthful offender," officers added.

The suspect left the area with his friends but was arrested at a home close by. He was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued.

The 14-year-old has been charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Carry Concealed Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with an Undertaking

He was held in custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing today.
