The Barrie Baycats have postponed Thursday's home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs due to poor air quality in the region and the high risk to health.
Despite the air quality index improving from 10+ to eight in the early afternoon, it rose again to nine just hours before first pitch, prompting the team to make the call to reschedule the game.
"We tried and left it to last minute," Baycats president Josh Matlow said in an email. "The weather was trending in the right direction, however (it) just turned to be very high risk."
The game will instead be played on Sunday at Athletic Kulture Stadium. First pitch is now scheduled for 3:08 p.m.
Thursday was promoted as a free-to-attend game for the Baycats, a promotion which will carry over to Sunday.
Games in Kitchener and Welland were also postponed on Thursday due to the air quality, while Toronto had its game in Brantford on Wednesday postponed for the same reason.
Juan Benítez was supposed to start for Barrie, while Wilgenis Alvarado was expected to start for Toronto after having his scheduled start moved up from Thursday.
