City police arrested and charged a Barrie man after break-and-enters at a convenience store and restaurant near Georgian Mall this morning.
At 1:40 a.m., Barrie police responded to the first report at the convenience store on Bayfield Street just north of Georgian Mall.
"Police observed that entry to the store had been gained by forcing the door open after an attempt was made to break the glass door with a rock," officers wrote in a release. "Once inside, the person responsible stole some items from the store and left on foot towards Bayfield Street."
Video surveillance helped police get a description of the suspect and a short time later, a man fitting it was located behind Walmart and taken into custody.
"He was found to be in possession of items that were stolen from the convenience store break-and-enter," officers continued.
Then at 6:23 a.m., police were contacted about a break-and-enter at a restaurant across the street from Georgian Mall.
"It was apparent that that break-and-enter had occurred at some point during the overnight hours after the drive-thru window was broken," police say.
A description of the suspect was gathered through video surveillance, again, from the restaurant. officers say they determined it was the same suspect that was already in custody.
"Police were able to determine that the restaurant had been broken into at 1:11 a.m. and it would appear that the suspect responsible simply walked north on Bayfield Street until he chose his next business to break into."
A 38-year-old Barrie man of no fixed address has been charged with break-and-enter (2 counts) and failing to comply with probation.
He has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing later today.
