February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month a dedicated time to recognize and honour the legacy of Black communities locally and across Canada, celebrating the contributions made in the arts, sciences, business, and across all disciplines.

The Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black woman to be elected to the House of Commons and member of the federal Cabinet advocated for national recognition of Black History Month. In December 1995, the House of Commons officially and unanimously recognized February as Black History Month. Senator Donald Oliver the first Black man appointed to the Senate added to the importance of the month in his motion to recognize the contributions of Black Canadians and Black History Month in 2008.

The 2024 National theme for Black History Month is Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate a Future to Build.

In recognition of Black History Month, Collingwood will raise the Black History Month flag on February 1st at 4:00 pm at the Community Flagpole, Collingwood Public Library.

Throughout February take time to learn more about the vibrant black community in Collingwood and the surrounding region.
