The Borden Firefighter will be strapping on their gear and walking from Borden to Barrie, all supporting the Terry Fox Run.
Borden Firefighters are encouraging other fire departments to participate in this year's We "Will" Walk fundraiser to support the late Will Dwyer's ambitious goal of raising $2 Million.
Will's son Robert, a retired firefighter, and his colleague Jason Jongen lead the event on Saturday, August 26th.
Barrie's "Million Dollar Man" Will Dwyer
Jongen explains, "We'll walk 20 Kilometres from Legacy Park at Base Borden to Will Dwyer Park in Barrie. Some will be dressed in full bunker gear with SCBA, and some can wear just gym clothes. I will walk in full gear with SCBA for 20 kilometres."
"The gear adds 60 pounds of extra weight" he adds.
The first walk occurred in 2019, and Jongen says it was a thrilling experience.
"It's amazing to get so many fire departments together and see the names on the back of everybody's coats. We had firefighters from several communities getting to know each other for those 20 Kilometers. "
Dwyer and Jorgen says firefighters can show up on the day of the event, and no pre-registration is needed.
"We're not going to turn anybody down, just as long as they're walking in memory of Will Dwyer and Terry Fox. People can walk as far as they want and duck out—no big deal."
The walk will end at Will Dwyer Park in Barrie, where anyone not participating can show their support by meeting the walkers at the site.
There will be a barbecue around 12:15 /12: 30. Food is complimentary with the possible donation towards Will's $2 million goal.
Will became Barrie's Million Dollar Man when he raised his first million for the Terry Fox Run. Shortly after he reached his goal, he said he would try get to the $2 million mark. He passed away in 2022, but his goal still exists.
