A federal offender unlawfully at large has been caught by an off-duty Barrie Police officer.
Evan Haney, 29, was known to frequent the Kitchener-Waterloo area, Cambridge and Milton, as well as having ties in Newfoundland. It is unknown why he was in Barrie.
He was serving a two-year, three-month sentence for assault with a weapon, fraud under $5,000, and break and enter.
According to Barrie Police, an off-duty officer recognized Haney, with one witness adding that the arrest occurred in front of a gym on Live Eight Way.
The arrest was made without incident before Haney was remanded by an Ontario court later Wednesday.
Haney is back behind bars after a breach of his statutory release on November 25, although the OPP Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad did not alert the public until Thursday.
Barrie Police says he is facing additional charges of vehicle theft, two counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, and theft of a credit card.
