Drivers in Barrie have a new roadway to use.
Officials gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon to open the Bryne Drive South extension which connects Caplan Avenue to Harvie Road.
City of Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall says the extension will help to improve traffic flow and connectivity across the south end.
"I know that our local residents have patiently awaited this project," said Nuttall. "It has more options for active transportation with the separated bike lanes on either side. "
According to Nuttall, the extension opened ahead of schedule and the project was under budget.
The $16 million project began construction in July 2023, and features:
- Five lanes with sidewalks, as well as separated bike lanes
- New sanitary sewer, new watermain, and stormwater treatment systems
- Updated landscaping and new tree plantings
After the ribbon cutting, the mayor took the first drive along the roadway in a fully electric Ford truck that's part of the City of Barrie's new fleet.
The second motorist passing through the extension stopped and told media he's looking forward to the completion of the north extension portion to Ardagh Road.
