A Barrie man is up on criminal charges after a motorist was spotted by officers travelling at "an extremely high rate of speed" on Burton Avenue south of Essa Road.
Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, police say the vehicle left the road, collided with some fencing, returned to Burton Avenue, where it travelled a short distance with two flat tires.
After a brief struggle, the motorist was taken into custody. Officers said the 34-year-old exhibited signs of impairement and was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued.
"As a result of this ongoing investigation, and after tests were conducted by a qualified breathalyzer technician, police were able to confirm that the driver was impaired. He was also found to be in possession of a substance believed to be cocaine," police said in a news release on Thursday.
The suspect was charged with several impaired driving offences, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, drug possession and obstruct police.
He was held in custody for a bail hearing on Thursday.
