Call it an early spring…if you believe in four-legged, furry forecasters
Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow
Despite their poor track record, many today are pinning their hopes on a quick end to winter and an early start to spring on groundhogs.
Folklore will tell you if they see a shadow they’re scared back into the lairs for another six weeks; no shadow means an early spring.
Statistics will tell you groundhogs have only been right 37 per cent of the time.
That said, Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow, did not scurry back to his lair giving hope to an early end to winter.
Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia saw his shadow.
Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania did not see a shadow.
