Canada will only participate in the Tokyo Olympics if they are postponed a year

International Olympic Committee now says postponement is an option

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) say they will not send teams to the Tokyo Olympics unless the games – scheduled to begin July 24 – are delayed by a year.

This is not solely about athlete health – it is about public health. With COVID-19 and the associated risks, it is not safe for our athletes, and the health and safety of their families and the broader Canadian community for athletes to continue training towards these Games. In fact, it runs counter to the public health advice which we urge all Canadians to follow.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach has said the Games will not be cancelled but said Sunday postponement is an option.

Games officials have set a deadline of four weeks to make a decision.
