Barrie police say a person was robbed of their cellphone they were trying to sell.
Officers were alerted about the robbery around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Mapleview Drive East and Prince William Way.
Police say the victim had used a social media platform to sell a phone. The suspect and seller agreed to meet on a nearby catwalk, and when they did, the seller showed the person the phone that was being sold. Police say the suspect grabbed the phone, pushed the victim, and fled. He was last seen on foot, possibly heading south towards a nearby high school. The victim was not injured.
The suspect is described as male, black, possibly 16 years old, wearing a black hoodie with a gold logo, black pants, a black baseball-style hat, and a black medical face mask.
Anyone with information or who may recognize the wanted suspect based on the clothing description provided is asked to contact Investigating Officer Constable Woodward by email at mwoodward@barriepolice.ca.
"Barrie police strongly encourage people who utilize social media platforms to sell personal items to do so cautiously, and to use populated, well-lit areas to carry out these transactions," police stated in a news release.
Authorities also encourage people to conduct these sales during daylight hours and to have a second person present to witness the transaction.
The stolen phone is worth about $950.
