(Updated) Young child dies after being struck by recycling truck in Barrie

A young boy has died after being struck by a recycling truck in Barrie.

Around 12:43 p.m. on Thursday, Barrie police responded to a report of a collision on Red Maple Lane in the area of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street.

"Upon arrival, police learned that a 23-month-old male had been struck by a recycling truck. The young child was transported to a local hospital and later flown by Air Ornge to a Toronto area trauma centre where he was treated for life threatening injuries," police said in a news release on Friday morning.

Overnight, police learned the child died of injuries sustained from the collision.

"The investigation into this traffic fatality remains ongoing and updates will only be provided as the investigation permits," police said.
