Coast Guard warns against going on the ice near Midland as ice breaking operations begin this weekend

Everyone is encouraged to avoid the ice during and after

The Canadian Coast Guard says the CCGS Samuel Risley is making its annual trip towards Midland.

Ice breaking operations from the Risley are set to begin in the area of Midland on Georgian Bay, likely by Saturday morning. This could cause the ice to move, creating a real danger for anyone on it. All recreational users of the ice, from pedestrians, fishers, to snowmobilers and ATV operators, are urged to leave the ice during this time. Extreme caution is recommended after operations are complete, as the ice will remain unstable.

The Canadian Coast Guard works with its American counterparts to connect the waterways of the Great Lakes and includes ice breaking so scheduled vessel traffic can freely move through these shipping channels.
