The Barrie Colts U10B and Barrie Colts U12A Blue rep hockey teams held an “Apples for Hockey” fundraiser from September 13 - September 30, 2024. Combined, the teams raised $1900 towards team development and donated 1,173 pounds of locally sourced Barrie Hill Farms apples to the Barrie Food Bank.

“Did you know, according to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, one in three households (30.7%) in Simcoe Muskoka experienced some household food insecurity in 2023? This statistic was a compelling factor for our hockey team to find a fundraiser that not only raised funds for the team but also gave back to the community," said Ruth Tan, Team Manager for the Barrie Colts U10B hockey team and mom of a player on the U12A_Blue hockey team.

As part of the Apples for Hockey fundraiser, the Barrie Colts U10B and Barrie Colts U12A_Blue hockey teams sold 10lb bags of Barrie Hill Farms apples for $22 each. Supporters had the option to purchase for themselves from the following varieties, Cortland, Macintosh, Empire and Ida Red apples, and/or donate a bag to the Barrie Food Bank.

“The option to donate a bag to the Barrie Food Bank was a great way for friends and family who aren’t local to the area to still support the team.”, said Jessica Manson, Team Manager for the Barrie Colts U12A_Blue team.

The Barrie Colts U10B and U12A Blue hockey teams partnered with Barrie Hill Farms, a local family farm in Simcoe County, to supply the apples at a discounted cost to the team.

“We are grateful to Barrie Hill Farms for supplying us with the apples. This fundraiser not only helped us raise money for the team but has also taught our players the importance of giving back to the community and the impact they can have. It's a win-win," said Jaime Windle, Head Coach of the Barrie Colts U12A_Blue team.

On Wednesday, October 2, the players from the Barrie Colts U10B team and the Barrie Colts U12A Blue teams stopped at the Barrie Food Bank to drop off and weigh the apples they were donating. The apples from the U10B team weighed in at 607 pounds, while the apples from the U12A_Blue team weighed in at 566 pounds, for a total combined apple donation of 1,173 pounds of apples.

Following the apple weigh-in, the players were taken on a tour of the Barrie Food Bank to learn what the Barrie Food Bank is doing to fight hunger in our community.

The Barrie Colts U10B team and U12A_Blue team would like to thank their sponsors and supporters who bought apples from them through the Apples for Hockey fundraiser.
