The Barrie Colts have added a blend of hard-nosed physicality and offensive potential to their forward corps, acquiring right winger Anthony Figliomeni from the Oshawa Generals in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2030.
For the Colts, bringing in the 5-foot-11, 208-pound Mississauga native isn’t just about bolstering the immediate roster — it’s about adding a specific style of play that seamlessly fits the team’s long-term puzzle.
Selected by Oshawa in the fourth round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, the third-year forward brings both junior experience and heavy-hitting size to the lineup. In his first full season with the Generals, Figliomeni had six goals and seven assists for 13 points, alongside 60 penalty minutes in 55 games.
For Colts General Manager Marty Williamson, the trade provided a high-value opportunity to add depth up front.
“He kind of fits us a little bit going forward and into next year, being an ‘08 (birthdate),” Williamson said. “It just seemed like a really good value move for us, and (head coach) Dylan Smoskowitz had a very good relationship with him.
“We think he’ll score some goals for us, plus he plays a rugged game too.”
That rugged, physical presence is central to what Figliomeni brings to the ice.
“He’s not a small guy. He’s pretty strong,” Williamson added. “He’s got a reputation as a hard-nosed kid, and we just think it fits us a little bit, and hopefully we can get some goals out of him too, get a bit of a combination.
“He can kind of grow into next year with this group.”
The timing of the transaction caught many by surprise, but the minimal draft capital surrendered made it an easy decision for Barrie’s front office.
“This kind of came out of the blue, and the timing seemed right,” Williamson said. “We gave up a fourth in 2030, and four years down the road, I can get that back. So as I said, it seemed just like a really good value move for us.”
Figliomeni should be available to suit up with Barrie when they hit the road to take on the Brampton Steelheads on Friday night at the CAA Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
