The City of Barrie is seeking public input on whether to permit the use of e-scooters through participation in the Ontario Ministry of Transportation's (MTO) pilot program. The pilot began in January 2020 and will run until November 27, 2029.
The program sets out requirements for helmets, minimum age riders, and weight and speed restrictions.
According to the Ontario government, municipalities that choose to allow e-scooters are responsible for where they may be operated, such as roads and bike paths, in parks and on trails, where e-scooters may park, and whether insurance is required, including the type and coverage.
Currently, e-scooters are not allowed to operate in Barrie on city property or city streets, sidewalks and trails.
“As Barrie continues to grow, we’re exploring the role e-scooters could play as part of a broader range of transportation options to support mobility for all residents,” says Brett Gratrix, Senior Project Manager – Transportation, Development Services, in a news release on Monday. “Although they’re not currently permitted in Barrie, we’re seeing increasing interest and use, which is why we’re consulting the public before determining next steps.”
Residents are being allowed to learn about e-scooters, ask questions and complete a survey about whether to permit them in Barrie.
Feedback from the public will help form a report to city council that may include recommendations on whether to opt in to the provincial pilot program.
