Fall season does not mean the end of construction season in Barrie.

The city is investing dollars in critical infrastructure so roads and servicing keep pace with new housing and development in the south end.

Projects this fall include the expansion of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street.

Construction for Mapleview Drive East is expected to begin in November, with completion set for spring 2028. Construction on the Yonge Street portion won't start until next spring. The work will include widening Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street, improving key intersections, including the Yonge/Mapleview signalized intersection, adding multi-use trails and sidewalks, and reconstructing St. Paul Crescent.

“Investing in infrastructure is investing in Barrie’s future,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall, in a news release from the city. “Thanks to the significant funding support from the province, these projects will not only support the homes and businesses being built in our south end, but they’ll also make it safer and easier for residents to get where they need to go.”

The other project is the new Huronia and McKay Truck Sewer water main, with construction to begin this month, and completion set for spring 2028. The work includes installing a new water main on McKay Road East, new trunk sanitary sewers on McKay and Huronia Roads, and roadway construction and widening Huronia Road.

The Ontario government is funding these projects to the tune of more than $53 million.

“These investments will ensure that the south end of Barrie continues to grow to meet the needs of residents and businesses,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie – Springwater – Oro-Medonte.

Barrie-Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin said these projects ensure the government is improving local infrastructure and building stronger communities.

Residents should expect increased traffic impacts in Barrie’s south end while this work is underway.
