Residents in and around Angus may hear some unexpected booms this week as the Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot Angus hosts a military training exercise involving explosive-disposal teams and local police.
Exercise Cunning Pine 2026 runs from October 5 to 9 and is a collaborative Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) exercise involving local police forces and EOD responders from Borden.
The training gets underway Monday, with multiple controlled explosions of varying sizes planned for approximately 2 p.m.
More controlled explosions planned throughout the week
Smaller controlled explosions are also scheduled for the early afternoon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The exercise is designed to give police and military explosive-disposal responders an opportunity to train together in handling simulated explosive-related incidents.
On Friday, October 9, Ontario Provincial Police officers will take part in mock EOD scenarios at Division X.
According to the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces, OPP officers will use their police cruisers to respond to simulated calls around the base.
All of the Friday scenarios will involve inert items placed at designated locations on the base, with training signs marking the areas.
Officials say there is no threat to the public
The Canadian Armed Forces says the exercise is being conducted under controlled conditions and that public safety and security will not be at risk.
Residents in the Angus area should therefore not be alarmed if they hear explosions during the scheduled training periods.
Exercise Cunning Pine is scheduled to wrap up Friday, October 9.
